Giant sized dogs were predominantly selected based on morphologies, focusing on hypertrophy of a specific characteristic. Their long growth (18-24 months) must be monitored very closely to prevent any malformation in the skeleton and muscles. Giant breeds mature over an extended time period, from 18 to 24 months. This growth pattern and the resulting giant skeletal frame can impose enormous stress on the dogs joints. Supplemental Chondroitin and glucosamine may help to support healthy joint function and improve mobility in the largest of the breeds.
